Job summary:

Beyond Essential Systems (BES) is supporting the strengthening of laboratory services in Tuvalu, with a focus on the introduction of digital tools and improved information and data management. We are seeking a local Project Officer to provide on-the-ground support to help ensure data is accurately entered, workflows are optimised, and systems are used effectively.

This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term contract based in Funafuti, Tuvalu. The role will support day-to-day use of digital health systems, including assisting with data entry, result workflows, and basic troubleshooting, while working closely with BES technical staff for issue resolution and improvements.

Training will be provided, and no prior laboratory experience is required (though it is an advantage). This role would suit a school leaver or someone early in their career with strong computer skills and an interest in data and systems.

The position will work closely with laboratory staff, hospital staff, and the BES technical team to support smooth system use and high-quality data management.

About the role:

BES is supporting the rollout and ongoing use of digital systems within laboratory services in Tuvalu. There is a strong need for local, on-the-ground support to ensure data is entered accurately, users are supported, and systems are embedded into everyday workflows.


The Project Officer will provide day-to-day support to digital health systems, assist with data entry, support result entry and verification workflows, and coordinate closely with BES technical staff for issue resolution and improvements.

This role requires working closely with laboratory teams and relevant Princess Margaret Hospital stakeholders. Some local travel may be required. The position is full-time (40 hours per week), with leave and entitlements provided in line with local employment regulations. Required equipment, including a laptop, will be provided.


Role Description:

The Project Officer will support the effective use of data and information systems across participating laboratories in Tuvalu. The role includes data entry, basic troubleshooting, user support, and contributing to continuous system improvement. The officer will also assist with monitoring system usage and reporting requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support day-to-day use of digital health systems such as SENAITE (laboratory information management system) and Tamanu (electronic medical record) within laboratories.

  • Support specimen registration, accurate result entry, verification, and reporting processes in SENAITE.

  • Provide first-line troubleshooting and manage user support requests through agreed channels.

  • Deliver user training and refresher sessions on digital health systems.

  • Monitor system usage and data quality, and identify areas with issues or requiring additional support.

  • Assist with system configuration, integrations, and instrument interfacing activities under guidance from technical teams.

  • Liaise with BES teams to escalate and resolve technical issues.

  • Attend regular project meetings, contribute to reports, and provide updates on laboratory system usage with BES and Ministry of Health teams.

  • Ensure compliance with BES policies, including data protection and child protection policies.

  • Ensure compliance with policies (including Child Protection Policy) and fiduciary responsibilities in the carrying out of contracts.

  • Other responsibilities as reasonably requested by supervisors.


Selection Criteria

Qualifications:

  • Further study in data, IT, maths, science, or a related field.

  • A diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science is not required but would be an advantage.

Experience:

  • Experience with computers, data, reporting, or quality assurance processes.

  • Experience using digital health systems or providing training is highly desirable.

  • Previous practical experience in a laboratory is not required but would be an advantage.

Knowledge:

  • Strong numerical skills and attention to detail.

  • Basic computer and data management skills, understanding of IT systems, and confidence using digital systems.

  • Interest in data, systems or technology.
