About the role:

BES is supporting the rollout and ongoing use of SENAITE and Tamanu within laboratory services in Tuvalu. Following implementation, there is a strong need for local, on-the-ground support to ensure users are confident, workflows are optimised, and data quality is maintained.

The Laboratory Officer will provide day-to-day support to SENAITE and Tamanu users, assist with system configuration (tests, panels, reference ranges, reports), support result entry and verification workflows, and coordinate closely with BES technical staff for issue resolution and enhancements.

This role requires working closely with laboratory teams and relevant Princess Margaret Hospital stakeholders. Some local travel may be required. The position is full-time (40 hours per week), with leave and entitlements provided in line with local employment regulations. Required equipment, including a laptop, will be provided.

Role Description:

The Laboratory Officer will support the effective use of SENAITE and Tamanu across participating laboratories in Tuvalu. The role includes providing user support, training, troubleshooting, and contributing to continuous system improvement. The officer will also assist with monitoring system usage and reporting requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support day-to-day use of SENAITE and Tamanu within laboratories.

  • Provide first-line troubleshooting and manage user support requests through agreed channels.

  •  Assist with configuration of laboratory tests, panel tests, reference ranges, and workflows.

  •  Support specimen registration, result entry, verification, and reporting processes in SENAITE.

  • Deliver user training and refresher sessions for laboratory staff.

  •  Monitor system usage and data quality, and identify areas requiring additional support.

  •  Liaise with BES technical and project teams to escalate and resolve technical issues.

  • Support integration and instrument interfacing activities where required.

  •  Contribute to project monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) activities, including reporting.

  •  Attend regular project meetings and provide updates on laboratory system usage.

  •  Ensure compliance with BES policies, including data protection and child protection policies.

  • Ensure compliance with policies (including Child Protection Policy) and fiduciary responsibilities in the carrying out of contracts.

  • Other responsibilities as reasonably requested by supervisors.

Selection Criteria

Qualifications:

  •  Diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, or a related field.

  •  Equivalent practical experience in laboratory settings may be considered.

Experience:

  • Experience working in a medical or diagnostic laboratory.

  • Experience using laboratory information systems or other digital health systems is highly desirable.

  •  Experience providing training or on-the-job support to colleagues.

  •  Experience with data entry, reporting, or quality assurance processes.

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of laboratory workflows and diagnostic testing processes.

  • Basic understanding of IT systems and data management.

  •  Familiarity with quality assurance and result verification processes is an advantage.
